OVH Leads with 100,000 Servers as the Biggest Web Host Provider

August 18th, 2011 Web Hosting

It seems a better time, now, to start evaluating the development, witnessed in the hosting industry, as HostingCon 2011 has finished. The huge question questioned by many is, which one of the web hosting firms has the highest quantity of hardware, installed in its data centers?

Based on a boastful declaration made by the French hosting firm, OVH, its data centers are operating nearly 100,000 servers and the company has managed to exceed the 100,000 server limit.

Reports of this development led to OVH, being on top of the list of companies, suggested for the query “Who Has The Most Web Servers?” which took into significance content delivery providers, cloud computing providers, enterprise companies and hosts.

Top companies in this list include:

  • OVH: Running 100,000 dedicated servers (Source: Company forum)
  • SoftLayer: After the Dallas–based company completed its merger with The Planet, it now boasts nearly 85,000 servers under its command, and still continues to develop. (Source: Company press release).
  • Rackspace: With its rapid development, Rackspace Cloud has managed to improve, by installing up to 74,028 servers, in its San Antonio-based focal point. (Source: Company press release)
  • 1&1 Internet: The German-based web hosting company, 1&1 claims to offer ‘more than 70,000 servers’ through its official website. Although, it has not brought that number up to date since 2010, by now, a higher estimate could be suggested for the company. (Souce: company web site)

One of the largest competitors in the web hosting industry, missing from the list, is Go Daddy, which operates around 49 million domains, catering to nearly 9 million customers. There are several hosting giants, such as DreamHost with thousands of servers; although, official reports claim, it has only 1,500.
