CHiL Semiconductor Corporation recently released a new family tree of MOSFET drivers that focus on high efficiency voltage regulators. The company is best known for its production of high-performance, mixed-signal power management integrated equipment for servers. There are also driver variants available that utilize varying gate drives featuring temperature protection. In turn, this greatly improves server reliability and efficiency.
Voltage Range
These drivers are designed to operate at a voltage range between 5 and 12 volts. Also they were developed to maximize efficiency and grant a constant gate current right through the entire voltage range. Current servers never have 12 volts while operating, even in sleep mode. Therefore, these drivers will operate at 5 volts during standby in subsequent servers, storage and additional electronic equipment.

The CHL8515
One model, the CHL8515, operates beginning at 4 volts ranging to 13 volts. This driver is fully compatible with the variable gate technology which optimizes efficiency by adjusting the gate voltage to the optimal point. Additionally, the CHL8515 improves overall system reliability through their patented over-temperature protection function. This is available on every period of the voltage valve.
The protection point for the over-temperature feature can manually be set between 60 degrees and 120 degrees Celsius for each resistor. Furthermore, the gate drive has the ability to be maximized for high and low voltages with break drive pins.
The CHL8505
Another model, the CHL8505, provides users with a lower-cost option while maintaining the functionality of the variable gate technology. This variant operates at a fixed 5 volts compared to the range of the CHL8515. The CHL8505 offers a competitive, low-cost solution that retains brilliant efficiency. The CHL8515 can be bought for $0.29 per thousand pieces. The CHL8550 costs $0.25 per thousand pieces.
Technological improvements like these are the cause of driving down the cost of technology. Also, due to the energy efficiency, these decrease the overall amount of energy consumed by web hosting providers. As a result, these models may become the primary choice for server manufacturers in the near future.
