Security Researchers Discover Phishing Sites on Google Docs

June 6th, 2011 Web Hosting

According to the organization’s blog post, a wellbeing research group F-Secure has brought a disturbing news to attention on Monday, claiming that online application Google Docs may harbor many phishing websites. Google Docs are used by scores of users to open documents and spreadsheets, hosted through Google’s cloud platform. Since Google is a household name, it is widely trusted, so viewing google.com as the field name, visitors do not hesitate to open sites, but now F-Secure’s discovery has caused an uproar, forcing many to challenge the unspoken trust.

The wellbeing research firm said it nearly always manages to spot various phishing sites “via Google spreadsheets and hosted on spreadsheets.google.com.” These phishing sites have easily rooted themselves in Googles Docs and managed to go undetected by Internet browser’s online wellbeing detectors. This is mainly due to the fact that many of Google field names carry a legal SSL certificates that assure the users the site they are visiting is safe.

While conducting the research, a specific website F-Secure encountered, has become the root of much contention. The form on this site questions users to enter their Google Voice number, email address and the PIN code which has been accorded to your account. Even though the form suggests a phishing activity, many Google officials have made a link available for the website connecting to the company’s Help messageboard. F-Secure after making the discovery is lost on how to deal with the issue, therefore it has set up a conversation with others through Chirrup. Most of the answers on the conversation on F-Secure’s Chirrup page agree to the form being a phishing site. The wellbeing research firm also mentions that once it set up a post, it received confirmation from a Google hand, claiming the website to be the official Google form for Google voice transfer account.
