In the latest Netcraft Web Server, for January 2012, the lightweight open source web server software NGINX amassed more active sites than Microsoft Internet In rank Server for the initially time.

That makes NGINX the second most used web server software in the world right now, only trumped by Apache.

Let’s look at the numbers.

NGINX is larger than IIS for active sites

Looking at the development of the top four web server software packages from January 2011 to January 2012, we get this chart:

With Apache in such a huge lead, the changes between the additional three aren’t that noticeable.

In absolute numbers, in January 2012, NGINX had 22,221,514 servers and IIS had 22,142,114, so the difference is very small.

If we exclude Apache in order to get a better picture of the fight between NGINX and IIS, this is what it looks like:

It’s worth noting that it’s in the category for “active sites” NGINX is ahead. If you look at Netcraft’s “Market Share for Top Servers Across All Domains” numbers, NGINX is still behind IIS, but the gap is closing. It’s conceivable that if the trend continues, NGINX will take the number two spot even in that category shortly this year.

The future seems bright

Not long ago we published an interview with one of the members in the NGINX team.

In that interview, Andrew Alexeev who’s in charge of Business Development and Marketing for NGINX, said that data from sites like Netcraft and W3techs doesn’t shape the direction of NGINX.

Though, he added, “it does show us that NGINX is headed in the right direction, because for quite a while we’ve been the only web server with its market share steadily on the rise. So, the web server surveys are really excellent indicators for us in gauging whether we’ve been delivering a valuable product.”

So by those very same indicators, the NGINX team has done a tremendous job.

Web server software NGINX is now larger than Microsoft IIS

There are presumably more Android phones and diplomacy out there now than there are iPhones (and iPod Touches). Though, it seems Android users keep holding their wallets much closer to their chests than iPhone users and iOS users in general.

Case in point, according to a new report from Distimo, the App Store for iPhone generates nearly 4x as much revenue as Google’s Android Market in the US. This also includes revenues from in-app buys. Even looking at just the App Store for iPad, it outclasses Android Market with 2x the revenue.

In additional words, the collective app store revenue for iOS diplomacy is nearly 6x that of Android Market.

We reckon it’s pretty impressive – or sad, depending on your perspective – that even just the iPad lonely seems to be generating more money for developers than the entire Android app ecosystem.

Wake up, Google!

If this isn’t a wake-up call to Google, we don’t know what would be. Google desires developers to rally to the Android platform, but those developers have to have effective ways of getting paid, putting food on the table.

Right, Google’s Android Market doesn’t represent 100% of the revenues for Android apps, there are additional Android app stores as well. Though, we’d be highly surprised if Android Market didn’t account for the vast majority of the revenue considering it’s the “standard” app store for Android.

Until there’s a significant trend break here, most mobile app developers will keep focusing on iOS initially, and Android second. The large number of Android diplomacy out there clearly isn’t translating to actual money in developers’ pockets.

There can’t be much doubt that the mobile web is exploding in popularity. From the initially mobile web access offered commercially with the Nokia 9000 Communicator phone in Finland in 1996, things have stirred quick.

Today we’re seeing increased sales in smartphones and tablets, quicker mobile data connections, apps, and more. Basically, we’re accessing Internet services more and more from something that is not a PC.

We’ve place together some numbers to have a crack to show a picture of what the mobile web was like so far in 2011, how it is has developed, and perhaps take a peek into the future as well.

From trim and slim to media galore

The mobile web used to mean trimmed-down web pages, accessed over WAP or additional slow connections, serving up mainly text-based content to mobile phones with small screens.

Displays were measured in hundreds of pixels or less and the main method of input was the excellent ancient numerical keypad present on most mobile phones.

Today we see smartphones on the rise larger and quicker, now even with HD displays and soon with quad-core processors. With 4G connections reaching into speeds of hundreds of megabits per second, even a feature-length movie can be downloaded in minutes or streamed live.

Add tablets to that mix, which are often powered by even more powerful processors and have displays of up to 10-inches, making them suitable for browsing regular web pages in their full glory.

By adopting these latest mobile diplomacy, users’ expectations have changed dramatically. Today mobile web users expect a site to load just as quick on their mobile device as it does on their desktop.

That means more work for you if you design and develop websites. But it also means tremendous opportunities for your business.

More and more smartphones

Although a smartphone is not required to access the mobile web it sure helps having the larger show with touch input, quicker processor, and more storage that a mobile phone usually offers.

And customers worldwide are picking up smartphones nearly quicker than manufacturers can make them, it seems.

• 5.9 billion – The estimated number of mobile subscriptions worldwide in 2011.
• 13% – The smartphone share of all mobile handsets in use worldwide.
• 78% – The percentage of worldwide mobile data traffic that is consumed by smartphones.
• 1.6 billion – Number of mobile diplomacy sold to end users in 2010, an increase of nearly 32% compared to the year before.
• 19% – The percentage of worldwide mobile diplomacy sold that were smartphones.
• 472 million – Number of smartphones estimated to be sold worldwide in 2011.
• 982 million – Estimated number of smartphones to be sold in 2015.
• 80% – The share of diplomacy accessing mobile websites that have a touchscreen.
• 50 million – The number of public worldwide who have a mobile phone but that do not have electricity at home. In additional words, mobile access has further reach than electricity.

Many smartphones and additional mobile diplomacy have support for Wi-Fi, but to be truly mobile they require some type of mobile data connection, such as 2G, 3G or 4G.

With quicker connections come higher demand for mobile data. Although that demand has gone up significantly in recent years, the expectation is that it will continue to rise for a long time to come:

It’s hard to find any data numbers specific to mobile web, but here are a few that we find fascinating:

• 21.1% – By 2015, Nokia Siemens projects that mobile users will use this much of their mobile data on “mobile web/additional data”.
• 400 PB (petabyte) – The amount of mobile data traffic per month in the second quarter of 2011.
• 20% – The amount of mobile data traffic generated by the top 1% of mobile data subscribers.
• 1.2 billion – The number of active mobile broadband subscriptions worldwide in 2011.

Web browsing is one of the most common actions on smartphones and tablets, with many diplomacy being capable of showing the full, rich experience of a regular website. But the web browsing experience doesn’t just depend on what hardware you have, it also depends to a large extent on what mobile web browser you use.

In the latest StatCounter figures, Opera is still the leading mobile web browser with 22.5% market share, followed by movable Safari on iOS with just over 24%. That’s when we combine iPhone and iPod touch in the iOS number. iPhone on its own is just under 20%.

Additional in rank we’ve found related to mobile web browsing:

• 85% – Percentage of handsets shipped globally in 2011 that will include some form of web browser.
• 60 – The number of different types and versions of mobile web browsers in use on mobile handsets.
• 6,500 – Estimate of the number of distinct web-capable mobile device models out there.
• 3 – Spot of web browsing, behind messaging and apps, in a evaluation of share of active smartphone usage.
• 11.7% – Percentage of web users in China that exclusively use a mobile device to access the web.
• 140 million – Number of public that used the Opera Mini browser in October 2011.
• 86.2 billion – Number of pages served By Opera Mini.
• 12.7 petabytes – Amount of operator data that was compressed for Opera Mini users.
• 6.95% – movable’s share of global web browsing stats in November 2011.
• 2013 – Gartner predicted that the mobile web will be larger than the desktop web by then.
• 26x – Smartphones and tablet computers will increase mobile web traffic by this much during the next four years.
• 97.17% – Google’s share of all mobile search in November 2011.

movable-specific or general-purpose sites

It’s quite clear that for a large part of users accessing the mobile web regular web sites just won’t work. This could be because they’re too large (in terms of file size or pixel dimensions), they have scripting that is not supported by the mobile device, they don’t support graphics, or some additional reason.

But with the quick development in smartphones and tablets it’s also clear that many recent diplomacy have enough show size and processing power to deal with the regular versions of many websites.

  Interxion, the European colocation provided unveiled plans for increasing its existing data focal point in London campus. This news came on Wednesday Nov 2nd, 2011, when Interxion announced the new expansion plot for its data focal point. The plot includes expansion of both the space and power capacity. Interxion will also be adding 11 MW of customer power to the City of London campus.

  This expansion plot as been revealed months after Interxion announced reduction in its data focal point’s carbon footprint, by signing up to 100 percent renewable energy, from UK provider SmartestEnergy.

  The company claims that their location in London provides customers with better response times for demanding applications. (as mentioned by David Ruberg, who is the CEO of Interxion). No doubt London is one of the world’s largest Internet hubs and a huge market for carrier-neutral colocation data focal point space. Therefore, this expansion plot by Interxion is tapping into the future growth plans for its existing and potential customers.

  Interxion is currently catering for over 100 trading and investment companies, with low latency connectivity to trading exchanges located within close proximity to Interxion’s London campus.

  It is also worth mentioning here that Interxion is building another data focal point, which will house 1,700 square meters of new equipped space. The new data focal point is scheduled to be operational by the second quarter of 2012. This second London data focal point, known as LON 2, will support up to 4.3kVA per square feet of customer load and has been secured by a long term rent. LON2 investment is expected to be of approximately $52.4 million.

  The new Interxion projects will occupy up to 32,808 square feet of new equipped space in Europe, within one and a half year (from January 2011 and June 2012). This new space will be apart of Interxion’s new facilities and upgrades in key European markets, which include major cities such as Paris, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, London and Vienna.

  KDDI America, the Telecommunications provider company has recently invested approximately 85.5 percent of common shares in CDNetworks, which is a global content delivery arrangement service provider. The news came in a recent KDDI announcement, explaining the details of the investment in the South Korean headquartered firm.

  

  This seems to be a fantastic prospect for both KDDI and CDNetworks, since both have their strongholds. For instance, the KDDI fiber arrangement backbone stretches across 170 countries, counting 91 offices located across five continents, counting, Asia, Europe and Australia, North America and South America. Likewise, CDN services spans across 70 cities in 31 nations, with a strong hold in Korea, China, Japan, US and some European countries.

  According to KDDI, they are looking to combine Internet arrangement and CDN services and to add CDN services to their mobile arrangement platform. KDDI added that DN services accelerates Internet communication by cache and delivery of server content that is located closer to the end users. Nobutsugu Ogata, who is the director of enterprise product preparation at KDDI America,  said:

  “We look forward to offering Enterprise IT departments a range of services that can help them speed up the response their customers and internal users receive from the applications they need to access over the Internet — no matter where they are in the world.”

  NetDNA recently has come up with online customer service features as well as introduced new rates for the content delivery services to ensure giving a relatively cheaper substitute to the customers as compared to that of Amazon CloudFront.   Apart from this, the firm also offers plug-ins, that allow simple and quick incorporation with the major blogging and content management platforms like Drupal, WordPress, Joomla, X-Cart etc. According to the Vice President of Marketing at NetDNA, David Henzel, “the need for CDN services is critical to every website title-holder who desires to improve user experience, monetize their website or boost SEO.”  Henzel, further said, “We’ve seen this shift happen before in the web hosting market, and with our enhanced services NetDNA is leading the way for this shift to happen within the CDN market.” Praising the performance and services of NeyDNA, Todd Garland, the creator of BuySellAds said, “A relationship with NetDNA is in this area having a right partner who is responsive and able to support our changing desires as our business grows and develops.”
