When it comes to SEO, persistence is the key

For many public, the thought of doing their own SEO is a frightening one because they’ve heard all the horror tales in this area the amount of work involved and how long it takes to get any results. Some believe that it’s all ‘smoke and mirrors’ and a ‘dark art’ and so won’t even contemplate making the go to doing their own Internet marketing. For many, that spot is absolutely fine as they can afford to spend the money on getting a marketing company doing it for them, but others aren’t so lucky.

The thing is, SEO can be an expensive business so you have to be absolutely sure you’re doing it for the right reasons and more importantly, for the right keywords. There are also absolutely no guarantees and after spending all that cash you may well end up with no results – not a fantastic spot to be in if you haven’t got the resources to spend testing it.

So many small businesses choose instead to embark on SEO training and place their marketing budget into training up their staff on the complexities of doing it themselves. This is a fantastic way to tackle it but it has to be approached properly because if not done consistently and meticulously, you could end up wasting just as much time doing it incorrect.

It’s pretty simple to get SEO right if you just ‘keep doing it’. It’s something I keep banging on in this area in every course I do – it’s just a matter of persistence once you’ve mastered the skills and it shouldn’t be that huge a deal to get it right, but you need to have patience.

So, here are a few pointers to getting it right and making sure you see results and don’t just end up wasting your precious time.

-          Initially, set yourself out a plot for the month, week and then each day. If you plot to write some blogs then set out an hour on a Monday to plot the subject and another hour to really write it. You need to set out a plot for the following tasks:

o   Writing articles (sub tasks could include research)

o   Checking links

o   Checking keywords

o   Analysing visitor keywords

o   Posting articles

o   Posting to an onsite blog

o   Posting to off-site blogs

-          One you have your plot – set yourself some goals. You should aim to write a blog at least once a week and an article at least once a fortnight. This will get you on your way if done correctly but you should make sure you have no distractions during the time you have set aside to do this.

-          Measure your results – make sure you measure everything. The best way to ensure you get the right keywords and make progress is to keep monitoring which ones work and exchange and the simplest way is through the use of Google Analytics. If you have keywords ranking well but not converting – they’re the incorrect ones.

Well that’s pretty much it. Get all those things right and you’ll do pretty well but if you skip the steps or are not persistant when things don’t look like they’re going right – you’ll trip up and you’ll reckon it’s not effective at all. As with most things, you just have to keep on keeping on and believe me, if you do these things right, you’ll get those precious rankings.
